The two shabby railway bridges right outside Earlsfield station in South London are to get a Victorian heritage inspired revamp.

Work is expected to start later this month on a scheme to give the two bridges over Garratt Lane the much-needed facelift. Both are to be given a deep clean and then repainted in a heritage-style railway green colour with new netting also installed to render them pigeon proof.

And at the council’s request, both bridges will also have the name of the station featured prominently on them to recreate their original Victorian-era appearance.

Trams and steam train not included

In order to get the project off the ground the council is providing £100,000 towards the overall cost of the scheme.

The council said that it has been pressing Network Rail to undertake this work for some time arguing that refurbished and smarter looking bridges would help improve the street scene in this part of Earlsfield.

The repainting works should last around a month.

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Great! Hopefully will look good when done.

  2. Andrew Gwilt says:

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan could help out to refurbish Earlsfield railway station. Because he grew up there. And knows the area very well when he was MP of Tooting. Even though Earlsfield is in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

  3. ChrisC says:

Yes Earlsfield Ward is in the LB Wandsworth.

It is also in Tooting constituency.

And the station itself has been refurbished including lifts being added and other improvements made to it approx 5 years ago when h was still MP for Tooting.

Have you even been there or checked the wiki page for the station?

    • Andrew Gwilt says:

      Silly me. Thanks ChrisC.

Perhaps Network Rail could possibly replace the railway bridges as they are dirty and old. And by installing new railway bridges. If that might happen.
