Another station has completed its upgrade works ahead of the Elizabeth line opening, this time at Burnham in Buckinghamshire.
The railway runs on a viaduct above the street level, with the old station entrance and ticket office in front of the arches underneath the railway — with stairs up to a central platform.
Improvements include the opening of a new larger ticket office building with an accessible ticket window, new ticket vending machines, automatic ticket gates, and customer information screens with live travel information. Up at the platform level, the existing canopy has been cleaned, repaired and redecorated, while the customer toilets have been completely refurbished.
The station is now also home to a new cycle parking area that will make it even easier for those cycling in the local area with more than 45 spaces for bicycles.
Work will continue at Burnham to refurbish the subway and to convert the old ticket office at platform level into a new retail facility and waiting area.
These improvements build on work completed by Network Rail in 2019 that included the installation of a lift for the first time at this station.
Initially, when the Elizabeth line opens, passengers from Burnham will need to change at Paddington for services into central London before being able to make direct journeys later this year.
A pub quiz oddity, although Burnham station serves the town of Burnham, in Buckinghamshire, the station itself is in Berkshire — the boundaries were redrawn in 1974.
Hmm complete i think not i buy tickets on my phone yet they only have new card readers at Burnham….no phone readers why not? I’m sure I am not alone in this situation.
Interesting about the county boundary, I had not sussed that. Of course there is a station in England that serves a town in Wales (Knighton).
I was TfL’s lead getting the designs and the money for these upgrades (and those of all the other small on-network stations on the Great Eastern and Great Western) completed and through the various approvals. I’m semi-retired now but its really gratifying to see them coming together on the ground!
