Description

This exhibition develops the artist's ongoing interest in contemporary labour conditions. It centres around a series of miniature gargoyles. These are self-portraits, made of white tack. This material was stolen from an office where the artist works as a freelance copywriter.

Like white tack, the freelancer if flexible. He bends around his clients, manipulating his schedule, ethics and creativity to suit their terms. But in doing so, he joins a non-unionised workforce. An alienated pool of disembodies brains, who compete for any precarious employment contract.

In the last room of this exhibition, Hutchison's gargoyles appear in a three-channel digital animation. This is set in the office where they were secretly sculpted. Accompanied by a euphoric house track, they sing/groan fragments of text that he has written for corporate clients - urging us to try soy milk, open life insurance accounts or switch mobile phone contracts.

The video was developed in collaboration with a team of freelance creatives: Adam Dewhirst (digital modeller), Pierre Tardif (creative coder), Oisin Byrne (singer songwriter), Donal Sweeney (composer) and Sam Britton (sound designer).
