Print Journalism in 19th Century London

London has long been a news and printing centre. This talk by Laurel Brake will not only look at the rich variety of the London metropolitan press from national dailies, weeklies, monthlies and quarterlies to their local counterparts, but at the city’s role as an important distribution hub.

London’s specially developed institutions such as ‘Magazine Day’, newspaper trains, circulating libraries and railway sales points and its role as a press hub for other cities and regions of Britain will all be examined in this fascinating talk.

Laurel Brake is co-editor of two recent books on 19th century print journalism, The Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century Journalism and The Lure of Illustration. She was also the director of ncse, a free digital edition of six 19th century serials and is Professor Emerita of Literature and Print Culture at Birkbeck, University of London.
