The London Underground - taken for granted by many today, and yet a huge novelty when it opened in the middle of the nineteenth century, is the subject of an ‘in conversation' event with BBC Broadcaster Robert Elms, and the authors of a new book that celebrates the 150th anniversary of the London Underground.
During the event, Robert and the authors will discuss some of the more notable moments in the history of the Tube and how it came to represent the lifeblood of London. Mixing humour, fact and historical intrigue, the event promises to cover a range of subjects mixing London's history with the stories of the pioneering engineers, designers and social reformers who created the system.
The event is organised by London Transport Museum in partnership with Penguin to launch the new, lavishly illustrated official history of London's Underground network, Underground - How the Tube shaped London. The book explores the fascinating history behind the development of the Underground system and its vital role in shaping the culture and life of London.
