About the Events Calendar

The calendar has evolved out of a few aspects of my personal life and it seemed appropriate to convert that into something everyone can enjoy.

Firstly, in another place I was a fairly regular organiser of social events - mainly to historic or industrial sites for groups of people. As a group organiser I could often secure unusual access - or would pester places which don’t offer public tours to see if they would let a bunch of enthusiasts in for a peek.

I later left that environment following a bit of a dispute with that website owner - and while I tried to maintain the group events, my own personal life made that increasingly difficult.

I did however start going out to lectures and events on my own an awful lot more - and wrote about them on my blog.

Hence, I have a lot of mailing lists and subscriptions to venues which interest me - and people would contact me at times about setting up a forward events list.

Thus was born the events calendar.

It will focus not on the mainstream music/theatre/film events which are already so well supplied by the major newspapers and magazines - but will try to list the heritage open days, walking tours and mostly, the astonishing array of free (or cheap) lectures that the societies and universities of London provide. They really are, in my opinion, a little known and underused facility for Londoners.

I hope you enjoy browsing the calendar - and more importantly, enjoy some of the marvellous lectures or open days that are available.

About the Blog

I tend to write about snippets of history I come across or reviews of lectures/events I have been to. There will also be occasional random musings, rants or political commentary.

I am quite political as a person, and it should be noted that I lean towards a Libertarian stance - which means I can sometimes sound like a lefty, and sometimes sound quite right wing. The best thing though, I can at various times annoy both the authoritarian left and the socially conservative right - which is quite fun.

Unlike some thematic blogs, I don’t really have a core theme - unless you call my own personality acceptable - to base the blog about, so it can sometimes seem that it is all over the place. Then again - quite often I am also all over the place.
