You’ve probably seen Paul Catherall‘s art somewhere, even if you didn’t know the distinctive style was the work of one man. To mark 20 years of Linocuts, there’s currently exhibition devoted to his works.
Paul Catherall is a regular poster printer for the London Underground, and is also well known for his famous block prints of modernist buildings, giving them a colourful beauty that is often a gateway drug into a love of Brutalism in its rawest forms.
Catherall started printmaking in 1998 to mark the approach of the Millennium, and his was was taken up by the London Underground for his first poster commission in 2001, and his work was featured on the cover of a book marking a centenary of tube posters.
His first large solo show was at the Oxo Gallery in 2005, and he has returned with a 20th anniversary retrospective of his works.

Some of the pieces are very abstract, but most take the essence of what makes a building instantly recognisable and emphasizes them with their solid colour renderings.

The exhibition, Paul Catherall: Futures Past – 20 years of Linocuts is open 11am-6pm at the Oxo Tower Wharf daily until 13th May. Entry is free.
