In a blatant PR stunt, but one that looks like it was quite fun, Range Rover have driven one of their cars along a Crossrail tunnel.

A few strategically placed props to suggest a working environment, and demonstrate how a car can drive over a modest hump in the road, or part way up a curving concrete wall to get around some workmen.

All told, a sanitised tunnel with fake floor installed on top of the service railway underneath, but it’s a video of a Crossrail tunnel, with a car in it.

It’s not the first time cars have driven along rail tunnels as a stunt — ahead of the Olympics, a group of delegates visiting London to see how the building works were progressing, took a fleet of Land Rovers through the tunnel linking St Pancras to Stratford.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

I believe the service track has been removed in sections already and the concrete track bed (that you can see in the video) is being laid to give a flat surface for the rails (or ballast, if that’s being used in the tunnels) to rest on.

Forget track laying. Why not turn the whole thing over to four wheels? Should take a lot of traffic off existing roads.
