If you fancy reading out Shakespeare’s play within the grounds of Bankside’s first theatre, then such an opportunity takes place at the end of this month.

The Rose was established in 1587, and is older than the more famous Globe theatre just up the road.

Today, the remains of the theatre sit underneath an office block, and is fund raising for a conservation effort, and based on the last time I saw the plans, convert the space into a functioning theatre on top of the remains.

The Trust must now raise pledges of £3 million, and are seeking slightly smaller contributions for a chance to read one of the bard’s plays in the subterranean space.

Each play has been reduced to approximately 1 hour, and it costs £10 per person, per play to join in.

Alternatively you can be in the audience, for the same fee.

Booking to be on either side of the stage is here.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you
