One step closer to taking a trip in a curious little train under the streets of London after Islington Council approved an application to open up the Mail Rail to the general public.
As reported back in October, the Postal Museum and Archive had submitted a planning application to turn part of the Mail Rail depot at the local sorting office into a museum.
That also included an option to convert some of the carriages used to carrying canvas sacks full of letters to carrying fleshy sacks mostly filled with water — aka, humans — on a short loop around the nearby tunnels.
The decision was expected by the end of last year, but was pushed back for some reason, and finally discussed yesterday. It would seem that full planning permission was granted, although the museum still needs to raise additional funds to secure the development of the museum.
But, in a few years time, empty abandoned tunnels deep under Farringdon could ring out to the sound of excited visitors. Although, maybe less excited if they read exhibition inside the museum about the Mail Rail which will be there for some time to come.
