Suggestions for things to do outside London in March

My now regular look ahead to events happening next month that would probably be in my events guide, if only they weren’t happening outside the psychological barrier of the M25 motorway.

National Saint David’s Day Parade 1st March
St David in period costume will take the lead. The spectacle will also include pipers and dancers in costume from Brittany and community arts performers. Cardiff, Wales

The Yorkshire Brass Band Championships 3rd-4th March
More than sixty bands will be competing in the magnificent setting of St. George’s Hall in Bradford. Bradford, Yorks.

Clowns Parade 4th March

Steam Train Rally 9th-11th March
Our Spring Steam Gala will feature an intensive timetable with a few unusual formations in service, it will also be an opportunity to see guest engines working alongside our own home fleet. Sheringham,

The Kiplingcotes Derby 15th March
The Kiplingcotes Derby is said to be the oldest flat race in England, dating back to 1519, but it was not until 1669 that it became an endowed race thus ensuring its future. Market Weighton, East Yorks.

Shire Horse Society Spring Show 16th-18th March
The Shire Horse Spring Show represents the largest gathering of Shire Horses in the UK and quite possibly the world. Peterborough

Kempley Daffodil Weekend 17th-18th March
In memory of past times when the area was a mass production of cut-daffodils, guided walks and tours around the area. Kempley, Gloucestershire

Spring Steam Gala 17th-18th March
Ten steam trains offering trips along the heritage railway.

The 5th Wife Carrying Race 18th March
Featuring a course of around 250m, and including around 10m of acent and descent, the male contestants carry their wives in this race. Dorking, Surrey

Pioneer Motorcyle Run 18th March
Around 300 motorbikes parade from Epsom Downs to Brighton. East Sussex

Hawick Reivers Festival 23rd-25th March
A 16th century festival in the town with parades and demonstrations of falconry, archery and horsemanship. Hawick, Scottish Borders

Kent Game and Equine Festival 24th-25th March
Country sports festival with demonstrations and trade stalls. Maidstone, Kent

World Pooh Sticks Championships 25th March
A recreation of the famous game from the novel, along with a local funfair Day’s Lock, Oxfordshire

The Tichborne Dole 25th March
In a tradition that dates back to the 13th century, bags of flour is handed out to local residents. They receive one gallon of flour per adult and half a gallon per child. Alresford, Hampshire
