I’ve recently treated myself to a nice new toy, in the form of an A3 sized flat-bed document scanner. I say new – actually second hand from eBay otherwise I couldn’t have afforded it.
However, it will finally let me do something I have wanted to do for ages, and that is start scanning in my copies of Victorian newspapers properly at last. So far I have had to cope with either taking a photo with the camera, or trying to make multiple scans using a small A4 scanner that came with my printer then digitally gluing them back together.
Finally, I can start doing something more methodical with my newspaper collections.
I have some ideas about how to put the articles online in a more logical and archival manner, but will need to do some experiments with that first.

I’ve been following along discreetly for a while without commenting. But this post is intriguing enough to grab me out of my shell. I’m really looking forward to seeing the results of this project. What sort of plans have you got for sharing the papers? If you’ve got a fair supply of papers you could probably start up a whole new blog – the world’s first Victorian blog?
Anyway, I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes of this.
If these are originals (and thus out of copyright) perhaps Project Gutenberg or similar would be interested in in hosting, distributing and transcribing them once they’ve been scanned in?
(long time lurker, first time poster) when i was looking at this page i couldn’t help think of all the photos you took of the Diamond Jubilee the other day… what is the occasion for the pictures here i saw the caption about the Lord Mayor but it seems excessive just for him (i so hope i didnt miss something obvious in the typing)
