Despite Greenwich council’s notorious antipathy to fireworks for Guy Fawkes Night, they laid on a decent enough spectacle last night with a river based display next to the Old Royal Naval College.

I am still indifferent to the seemingly recent idea of playing music to fireworks, as for me, the booms of the fireworks are the music themselves, but last night they chose a suitable range of patriotic music from Jerusalem to Handel’s Zadok the Priest, and I am sure I heard the National Anthem at one point.

I chose to stay on the north side of the river and a modest distance away so as to try and get the College buildings in the same photo as the fireworks. Photographing fireworks is a skill that needs a lot of practice, and the lack of regular fireworks means there is limited opportunity to do so. Despite that, I am modestly pleased with the results.

A few of my favourites.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

I was on the North bank as well, in Island Gardens. In retrospect I think in Romney Road, to the South, or in the park would have been better. Wouldn’t have had the smoke from the barge.

Ahh, I avoided Island Gardens because I wouldn’t have been able to get the building and fireworks into the same photo.

Never thought about the smoke issue.

Nice shots! I was tempted to go north of the river to get some reflections in the water, but ended up in the College grounds instead to get the buildings. I couldn’t hear any music though!!
