A few weeks ago I watched the first stage of the cable car’s pylon being erected on the north side of the Thames, and wandered back this weekend to see the impact the white needle is having on the surrounding areas.
As a clean, white thing, it stands out quite sharply with the older industrial estate and brown/grey roads and railways that punctuate the area.
The big question I have is how long it will stay clean and white, or whether the many metal edges in the double-helix design will start to leak rust down the sides over the next few years.

On the south side, the terminus building is progressing, with the distinctive unit in place on the upper floor to receive the cables. With the red branding from the sponsor being much in evidence, it was possibly a coincidence that the giant wheel is also red?

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE
This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.
It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.
Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.
If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.
Thank you
This is so cool – can’t wait to take a ride on it. Hope it’s open when I’ll be over in May.
Last I heard completion won’t be until after the Olympics, so no if it’s this May, possibly yes if it’s May 2013.
Lovely photos ‘Ian’! 🙂
Wow, what an awesome sight! So tall and all by itself. My girlfriend keeps bugging me to take her with me on my next trip to London, so maybe I should push it back a bit to see this in operation.
